With more and more people considering moving abroad, there’s so much information out there about expat-friendly cities. But much of the resources out there cover the same, big name destinations. In this article, we’ve tried to highlight a destination for everyone. Whether you’re motivated by weather, culture or cost, here are five options for each type of expat.

Best Option For Relaxed Way Of Life – Malaga

You could argue that Malaga doesn’t quite qualify as a hidden gem, but it certainly doesn’t get as much attention as the likes of Madrid and Barcelona. Despite this, it’s perfect for expats in a number of ways.

Malaga is more affordable than many other major Spanish cities, offers a beautiful climate for most of the year, and has great beaches – all of which lend themselves to a tranquil way of life. Nobody is in a hurry in Malaga, a personality trait that is immediately inhabited by expats when they step off the plane.

Best Option For Weather – Paphos

If your decision is motivated by sunshine, there’s no shortage of options. But Paphos in Cyprus is perhaps one of the most expat-friendly city of those that see hot weather all year round. The city relies heavily on tourism, so expect to be treated like royalty.

Many English-speaking expats are drawn there due to the lack of a language barrier which makes the transition easy if you are coming from an English-speaking nation. This also means there’s a large expat community in the city, which can make it easier to meet new people compared to other foreign cities.

Best Budget Option – Da Nang

It’s becoming increasingly popular for expats to seek out budget destinations that offer an extremely affordable way of life. While you’ll find a whole host of options out there online, Da Nang in Vietnam is one that often goes under the radar.

Its rising popularity as a tourist destination means you won’t feel like an outsider, but the friendly locals will also have you feeling like a Vietnamese native in no time. As for the city itself, beaches, great cafes and stunning natural wonders make it a wonderful place to call home.

As for the cost of living, street food dishes can be purchased for the equivalent of under a dollar, allowing you to live a comfortable life for between $400 and $800 each month.

Best Cultural Option – Montevideo

Great culture means different things to different people. But if you’re looking for rich history, delicious cuisine, and proud locals, Uruguay’s capital of Montevideo has to be on your list (although it’s not on most people’s!) when it comes to expat-friendly cities.

Life in Montevideo is a blend of tranquility and vibrancy. Expect to spend your days strolling through peaceful streets, taking in the city’s stunning architecture and peaceful vibe. When the city really comes alive though, is during carnival season. Lasting for over a month, you’ll soon see why Montevideo is a top pick for those seeking out a cultural home. But regardless of when you visit, expect to always feel safe.

Best Big Name Option – London

If you’re looking to move to a big-name city that boasts career opportunities and a high quality of life, you’re probably looking at the likes of New York, Sydney, and so on. But we still think London tops the list when it comes to the more premium expat destinations.

It’s hard to match the city’s infrastructure. For drivers, the number of city centre car parks makes it easier to get around. For those who will be using public transport, London’s iconic tube network runs like clockwork.

The diversity of the city also makes it super easy to settle in. No matter where you are relocating from, you’re sure to find a taste of home, and it won’t be too long until you bump into someone from your home country too!
