Ever heard of Papua New Guinea or where it is located? I certainly didn’t. It is located in the south west of the Pacific and is known for having an extraordinarily cultural and biological diversity. Papua New Guinea is known for its beaches and coral reefs, but also active volcanoes, rainforests and hiking trails in the inland. Bat-El, from Hidden Sidewalks, shares lots of information about her life as an expat in Papua New Guinea.
Schon mal was von Papua-Neuguinea gehört oder wo es liegt? Ich jedenfalls noch nicht. Es liegt im Süden des Pazifiks und ist bekannt für seine außergewöhnliche kulturelle und biologische Vielfalt. Hi Bat El, tell us about yourself and how you ended up moving to Papua New Guinea?
Hi, my name is Bat-El, but people abroad often call me Eli. I’m 31 years old, and work in two departments – an IP department and a Marketing department in a medium size company.
Hallo, ich heiße Bat-El aber die Leute im Ausland nennen mich oft Eli. Ich bin 31 Jahre alt und arbeite in zwei Abteilungen – einer IP-Abteilung und einer Marketingabteilung in einem mittelständischen Unternehmen.
When I was 26 years old, my husband got a job offer to run a top-notch agro-tech farm in a developing country. Along with our toddler daughter, we moved to the main city of Papua New Guinea, Port Moresby, also known as POM. We stayed in POM for almost two years and luckily the company found a job for me as well.
Als ich 26 Jahre alt war bekam mein Mann ein Jobangebot, um eine erstklassige Agro-Tech-Farm in einem Entwicklungsland zu betreiben. Zusammen mit unserer Tochter zogen wir in die Hauptstadt von Papua Neu Guinea, Port Moresby, auch bekannt als POM. Wir waren fast zwei Jahre in POM und glücklicherweise fand das Unternehmen auch einen Job für mich.
Is it easy to connect with locals or are there any (language/cultural) barriers?
Most of the Papuans that live in POM can speak fluent English. The cultural barrier is the real deal about POM. There are 800 tribes in Papua New Guinea, and many of them are coming to find jobs in POM.
Die meisten Einheimischen, die in POM leben, sprechen fließend Englisch. Der Kulturunterschied ist die eigentliche Herausforderung. Es gibt 800 Stämme in Papua Neu Guinea und viele von ihnen suchen Arbeit in POM.
POM demonstrates an interesting chaotic environment. It has its charm but it is not a safe place. I’m always telling the story about our first drive from the airport to our new home in POM.
POM ist eine interessante chaotische Umgebung. Es hat seinen Charme, ist aber auch kein sicherer Ort. Ich erzähle immer die Geschichte von unserer ersten Fahrt, vom Flughafen zu unserem neuen Zuhause.
Through the car window I saw so many people that walked on the streets with machetes. I asked our local driver if they are going to cut the bananas from the trees as there were so many banana trees. He smiled at me and that was the moment I realized what kind of place POM is.
Als ich durchs Autofenster geschaut habe, habe ich so viele Menschen, die mit Macheten auf der Straße herumgelaufen sind, gesehen. Ich fragte unseren Fahrer, ob diese verwendet werden, um die Bananen von den Bäumen abzuschneiden, da es so viele Bananenbäume dort gab. Er lächelte mich nur an und in diesem Moment wurde mir klar, was POM für ein Ort ist.
Luckily we managed to find some local friends among the employees of the farm project. They were our life belt, explaining us everything we need in order to stay safe in POM.
Zum Glück fanden wir ganz schnell Einheimische Freunde unter den Mitarbeitern des Farmprojekts. Sie waren unser Rettungsring und erklärten uns alles, was man wissen musste, um in POM sicher zu sein.
How about the cost of living?
Living in POM can get highly expensive. This is the reason why most of the companies will provide you with accommodation, school/pre-school fees, and even food expenses. You can definitely go to a local market and get some of your ingredients in reasonable prices, but if you want to feel secure you will go to a supermarket where most of the products are imported.
Das Leben in POM kann sehr teuer sein. Das ist auch der Grund, warum die meisten Unternehmen einem Unterkunft, Schulgebühren und sogar Lebensmittelkosten zur Verfügung stellen. Man kann jedoch auf jeden Fall auf einen Markt gehen und dort Essen zu vernünftigen Preisen erhalten. Wenn man jedoch auf der sicheren Seite sein möchte, geht man am Besten in einen Supermarkt, in dem die meisten Produkte importiert werden.
What is your favourite and least favourite part about living in Papua New Guinea?
My favorite part about living in POM were, without any doubt, meeting so many unique expats that became my soulmates. My second favourite thing about POM was the amazing nature that surrounded us, especially the birds of paradise, that unfortunately are hunted by the tribes for traditional ceremonies, and the beautiful flower named spider-lilies.
Was ich am Leben in POM besonders mochte ist, ohne Zweifel, dass man so viele einzigartige Auswanderer, die zu meinen Seelenverwandten wurden, kennengelernt hat. Als zweiten Punkt gefiel mir die tolle Natur, die uns umgab, auch sehr. Besonders die Paradiesvögel, welche leider von den Stämmen für traditionelle Zeremonien gejagt werden, und die schönen Blume, die Spinnenlilien genannt werden.
The worst part about living in POM is the constant feeling of vulnerability.
Das Schlimmste am Leben in POM ist das ständige Gefühl der Verletzlichkeit.
What was the biggest culture shock for you?
My biggest culture shock for me was the dreadful state of women and children. Generally speaking, locals don’t have much money and kids until the age of 5 literally have to survive with no meds or with a small amount of health care (kids until 5 tend to get sick more). I heard of a 4 years old kid that died of diarrhea, and the sentence that really surprised me was “her parents will be fined because her mom is pregnant again”.
Mein größter Kulturschock war für mich der schreckliche Zustand von Frauen und Kindern. In der Regel haben Einheimische nicht sehr viel Geld. Kinder, bis zum Alter von 5 Jahren, müssen buchstäblich ohne Medikamente oder mit einer geringen Menge an Gesundheitsfürsorge überleben (Kinder bis 5 Jahre neigen dazu mehr krank zu werden). Ich habe von einem Fall eines 4-jährigen Kinds gehört, das an Durchfall gestorben ist. Der Satz, der mich wirklich überrascht hat, lautete: “Ihre Eltern werden bestraft weil ihre Mutter wieder schwanger ist”.
Women are suffering from violence, and a lot of kids are born to rape victims. It’s really unpleasant to be a local woman there, especially if you are a “coastal”. They complain that the “coastal” men never protect them from the “Highlander” men because the “Highlander” men are stronger, but if you are a “Highlander” woman, you will probably have the protection that you need.
Frauen leiden oftmals unter Gewalt und viele Kinder werden als Resultat von Vergewaltigungen geboren. Es ist wirklich unangenehm eine einheimische Frau dort zu sein, vor allem wenn man eine Frau von der “Küste” ist. Die “Küstenfrauen” beschweren sich, dass die “Küstenmänner” sie nie vor den “Highlander-Männern” beschützen, weil die “Highlander-Männer” viel stärker sind. Wenn man jedoch eine “Highlander-Frau” ist, hat man wahrscheinlich den Schutz, den man braucht.
I will cheer it up by saying the UN is trying to help a lot and they started a project of females only transportation etc., but it is still far from being a nice place for women and children.
Ich werde das alles ein wenig aufmuntern, indem ich sage, dass die Vereinten Nationen versuchen sehr viel zu helfen. Sie haben ein Projekt beginnen, welches ausschließlich Frauen transportiert. Es ist dennoch noch ein langer Weg und kein schöner Ort für Frauen und Kinder.
What is your favourite local food?
The most divine tropical fruits and nuts! Pineapples were perfect. Coconuts were absolutely my favorite as well as the paw-paw (papaya), which were a variety from Japan as far as I know. Locals call the variety pink lady paw-paw.
Die göttlichen tropischen Früchte und Nüsse! Ananas waren perfekt. Kokosnüsse waren mein absoluter Favorit und auch die Paw-Paw (Papaya), eine Sorte aus Japan, soweit ich weiß. Einheimische nennen die Sorte Pink Lady Paw-Paw.
What is your favourite thing to do in Papua New Guinea that people should do if they visit?
My favorite thing to do in Papua New Guinea was to sail for a day trip to one of the islands surrounding POM. It’s always a relaxing and a pleasant experience, especially for those who like to dive as the reefs there are remarkable.
Am liebsten habe ich in Papua Neu Guinea einen Tagesausflug zu einer der Inseln rund um POM unternommen. Es ist immer eine entspannende und angenehme Erfahrung, vor allem für diejenigen, die gerne tauchen. Die Riffe dort sind bemerkenswert.
What was the biggest challenge for you once you moved to Papua New Guinea?
My biggest challenge was to find someone that will take care of our daughter while I was going to work. I was struggling with that a lot, eventually, I left my workplace and only then I found the perfect match for us.
Meine größte Herausforderung bestand darin, jemanden zu finden, der sich während unserer Arbeit um unsere Tochter kümmert. Ich hatte stark damit zu kämpfe und verließ deshalb irgendwann meinen Arbeitsplatz. Erst dann fand ich die perfekte Ergänzung für uns.
What is/are a fun fact(s) about Papua New Guinea most people don’t know about or expect?
One of the unique things about PNG (Papua New Guinea) is that it consists, 800 different tribes, and some of them never left their own area, because of the mountainous demographical landscape. It also means that PNG has no less than 800 different dialects.
Das Einzigartige an PNG (Papua Neu Guinea) ist, dass es aus 800 verschiedenen Stämmen besteht. Einige von ihnen haben aufgrund der demografischen Gebirgslandschaft nie ihr eigenes Gebiet verlassen. Das bedeutet auch, dass PNG nicht weniger als 800 verschiedene Dialekte hat.
What is the biggest difference between your home country Israel and Papua New Guinea?
I believe that one of the major differences between Israel to almost any other place, I’ve visited, is the pace. In Israel the pace of things is extremely rapid, unlike PNG where the pace is extremely slow. In PNG people will allow themselves to enjoy their weekends without opening their e-mail inbox even once, which was a refreshing experience for me.
Ich glaube, dass einer der Hauptunterschiede zwischen Israel und fast jedem anderen Ort, den ich besucht habe, das Tempo ist. In Israel werden Dinge extrem schnell gehandhabt, im Gegensatz zu PNG, wo das Tempo sehr langsam ist. In PNG erlauben sich die Menschen ihre Wochenenden zu genießen ohne ihr E-Mail-Postfach zu öffnen, was für mich eine erfrischende Erfahrung war.
What would be your top advice for people who are thinking to move to Papua New Guinea?
My best advice for anyone who thinks about moving to POM is to join a group of Expats in POM before making the first step in order to see if there is someone who is about to move out, so you might get his/her furniture. I realize it sounds funny but there is no IKEA in POM, It’s also a good start point of meeting other expats in order to find out how much of the expenses and bureaucracy the company that hired you is willing to do for you.
Mein bester Rat für alle, die über einen Umzug nach POM nachdenken, ist sich einer Gruppe von Expats in POM anzuschließen, bevor man den ersten Schritt macht. So kann man sehen, ob es jemanden gibt der gerade auszieht, um eventuell deren Möbel zu bekommen. Ich weiß, dass es komisch klingt aber es gibt kein IKEA in POM. Es ist auch ein guter Ausgangspunkt, um andere Expats zu treffen und Dinge zu erfragen wie Kosten, Bürokratie und solche Dinge.
